Gutters

Gutters are attached to roof edges and used to draw water down and away from the house and its foundation. Most gutters consist of sections of gutter, drop outlets and downspouts. Before that next storm arrives, consider how well your home will handle excess water. Gutters are the exterior drainage system of your home, and it is important to maintain them to prevent serious damage to your home's foundation.

What should I look for?

It's particularly important to analyze the rain gutter size and profile when selecting a gutter system. Gutters are formed in several profiles and sizes, the "K" and "U" shapes are standard profiles in gutter shaping. The "K" shape has an ogee-shaped front, that reminds one of the letter "K." Channels are 4-6 inches in diameter and matching downspouts are 2-4-inch rectangular or round profile (often corrugated) pipes. If you want more value for your dollar, then the larger systems are generally what you would choos`e since they are less likely to clog, especially if trees hang over your house. If you do have many trees in your yard that are near your house or hang over the roof then 3-by-4-inch downspouts are a good idea.

Common Gutter Materials

Gutters can be constructed out of aluminum, copper, galvalume, galvanized steel, copper penny aluminum, freedom gray copper, pre-weathered zinc, copperplus, designer copper aluminum, lead coated copper, paint grip steel.

The most common material used in gutters is hot-dip galvanized steel because it has been effectively used for more than 150 years. Hot-dip galvanizing is very prevalent as it stems from the corrosion resistance of zinc, which under the most severe conditions is generally better than iron and steel. When zinc is applied as a hot-dip galvanized coating, it forms a barrier against corrosion and also protects exposed steel. This keeps the gutters low on maintenance and allows for a long lifetime.
